A burn caused by a chemical can be just as destructive as an injury caused by an open flame. If a chemical burns the skin, the chemical should be flushed off the skin surface with cool, running water for 20 minutes or more. If the burning chemical is a powderlike substance such as lime, it should be brushed off the skin before flushing. Clothing or jewelry contaminated by the chemical should be removed. A lotion, such as one containing aloe vera, may be used to prevent drying and to make the skin feel more comfortable. The burned area should be wrapped with a dry, sterile dressing or a clean cloth. The burn should be rinsed again for several more minutes if the child complains of increased burning after the initial
washing. Minor chemical burns usually heal without further treatment.
